Product Innovation and Firm Survival in a Network Industry

چکیده
This paper studies product innovation and firm survival in the U.S. ATM/debit card industry. The industry started with a few shared ATM networks in the early 1970s. The number of networks grew quickly up until the mid 1980s, but then declined sharply. We construct a theoretical model based on Jovanovic and MacDonald (1994). In contrast to their model focusing on cost-saving technological innovation, our model shows a major product innovation may also trigger the shakeout. The theoretical predictions are tested using a novel dataset on network entry, exit, size, location, ownership and product choices. The findings suggest introducing the point of sale debit function in the mid 1980s played an important role driving the network consolidation. Unlike previous studies, we find little advantage of being early industry entrants. Rather, due to network effects in the industry, large networks had better chance to adopt the product innovation and survive the shakeout. JEL classification: E30; L10; O30

Surviving the Gales of Creative Destruction: Determinants of Product Survival in the Desktop Laser Printer Industry
In this paper, we examine the product life cycle in the desktop laser printer industry, from its inception in 1984 through 1996. During this time, the industry experienced a significant degree of innovation, as well as an enormous amount of product introduction and subsequent exit. The relative roles of market structure, innovation, and firm effects are explored in more detail using a multidime...

In this paper, we discuss co-operative product development across firm boundaries. Firstly, we discuss reasons why innovation may beneficially be co-ordinated among firms, and we provide some empirical evidence for the existence and significance of the phenomenon. Secondly, we discuss the relevance of co-operative innovation for the construction industry which, at present, is characterised by l...

This paper provides a model to explain the shakeout of the U.S. ATM and debit card industry, which emphasizes the role that a major product innovation — introducing the debit function in the mid 1980s — played in driving the network consolidation. Consistent with the theory, our empirical findings show that large networks had a better chance of adopting the debit innovation and surviving the sh...

متن کاملProcess and Product Innovation in a Vertically Differentiated Industry
We examine a vertically differentiated duopoly where firms invest in process and product innovation and then compete in prices under full market coverage. We show that (i) process and product innovation are complements (substitutes) for the low-quality (high-quality) firm; (ii) the firm which is initially more efficient invests more than the rival in process innovation; (iii) if the initial dif...
